Description

The Starr contract of 1826 was a small contract of only 2000 cutlasses. No scabbards were called for in the original contract. The grip is of hardwood, probably maple. The guard is made of convex iron with an outward edge roll. The 25 ¼ inch blade is flat with a narrow upper groove. The top edge of the blade is stamped “ET” for the inspector, Elisha Toby. It is also marked with “US” and “N Starr”. The sword is in fine condition, considering most of these are found heavily rusted from the sea environment. There is a small one inch of the outer rolled edge missing on the guard and some heavy pitting in the last eleven inches of the blade. A rare sword to find. Overall length is 30 ¾ inches.
