Description
This extremely rare porcelain teapot, with gold-flecked navy blue enamel over glaze and applied gilding in the Japonesque style, was made by The Royal Worcester Porcelain Company Ltd of Worcester, England, in 1880. The form of this teapot reflects the Aesthetic Movement's influence on British art forms of the 1860's, with particular inspiration from Japan. Designed and modelled by James Hadley, Royal Worcester's chief modeller, a similar teapot, enameled in yellow, is displayed in the British Museum in London.
The teapot has a square body on 4 small feet and a handle in the shape of a dragon. The dragon handle arches over the teapot and the head extends to form the spout. The lid has a pagoda knop. Overall size is 8" wide x 8" high, with a 5" square body. The teapot is marked with an R in a diamond, Royal Worcester's date mark for 1880. Carefully preserved and passed down through an English family, the teapot is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks, repairs or fading.
