Description
British Brown Bess Short Land Musket, Pattern 1769. Regimentally marked to the
42nd Regiment on top of barrel. Marked “RHR”. This is one of the rarest Brown Bess muskets as only four to five are known to date. All are in important collections and museums. Refer to “Muskets of the Revolution” by Bill Ahearn, page 58 for one of the known muskets. The carved initials on the left side of the butt are indicative of American capture. The barrel is stamped “WG” for William Grice & Son, ordnance lock contractor 1760-1790. The inside of the lock is stamped with the inspector “Crown 2” and the contractor initials “GH” for George Haskins, ordnance lock contractor 1757-1769. The musket shows heavy use with some necessary repairs but has been maintained in good serviceable condition.
