Description

This is an unusually nice clean brass gimbled box compass. The box is nicely dovetailed and is six inches square x 4.25 inches high. The sliding lid has the maker's label inside, "H. HUGHES INSTRUMENT MAKER". The top of the lid has a nice folk art incised carving of a ship at sail and signed "Jones 77". Hughes is recorded in business as an instrument maker in the 1830's in London and later became Hughes & Son.
