Description

This is a British 1777 Short Land Musket. This is a Revolutionary War period musket. The 42 inch barrel is fully marked with the British proofs, “Crown IP” which is believed to be the proof mark of John Pratt. The barrel is also marked “Westmoreland M”. The inside of the lock is marked “TH” conjoined and is probably the lock contractor Thomas Hadley, ca. 1776-1781. Also it is marked with a “Crown I”. The escutcheon is marked “9/36” for the 9th Company and Rack #36. The ramrod is marked “5/9” and is also stamped with “TH” for the contractor. The ramrod guide is clearly marked with inspector’s marks. Below the trigger guard are clear inspector’s marks and the stock has a good clear ordnance acceptance mark.
This musket was originally sold from an ad in December, 1978 Gun Report Magazine and we will provide the original bill of sale from a world renowned antique firearms consultant. This musket was advertised as completely original and in superb condition, as it stands today
This musket was probably removed from New York storage and sent to Canada immediately after the Revolutionary War. At that time the “Westmoreland M” was probably added to the top of the barrel. The 55th Regiment of Foot was given the secondary title “Westmoreland” in 1782 at the end of the Revolutionary War.
I have owned several Westmoreland marked muskets and have one on my website at the present time. I also have examined another and they are all Model 1779S. This is the first Westmoreland musket of the 1777 Model. The musket is in superb condition, seldom found on Brown Bess wartime muskets. The metal is all smooth with some traces of case hardening on the lock and hammer. All marks are clear and legible.
