Description
British Brown Bess Short Land Pattern 1777, Regimentally marked to the 69th Regiment. Top of barrel stamped with ordnance proof and marked “69th Regt”. The side of the barrel is stamped “*O”. There is a “Crown 9” stamp near the vent. The barrel tang also contains proper ordnance marks. The face of the lock is engraved, not stamped. Inside the lock is stamped with the inspector “Crown 3” and the contractor’s initial “TH” for Thomas Hadley, ordnance lock contractor 1776-1781. The butt has the store keeper’s mark.
The 69th Regiment saw service during the Revolutionary War. They were brought up from the West Indies to New York where they were engaged for a short period of time. They were then sent back to St. Kitts for the defense of Fort Brimstone Hill and were later captured by the French.
The musket is complete but shows sign of heavy war time use. The musket has heavy worm damage attesting to its West Indies use and storage. Rare to find a musket that is regimentally marked to Revolutionary War use.
