Description
Tazzas are rare in silver and exceptionally rare in brass. Only a half a dozen have surfaced in the last 50 years, of which I have owned three. The previous tazza that I owned, was acquired by me from a gentleman who was carrying it from a house call in Rome. It also had the family crest engraved in the center. This tazza measures approximately twelve inches in diameter and is four inches high. The family coat of arms consists of a crown above a divided shield. The shaping of the base would date this around 1740. It is in a nice unpolished as found patina. There are traces of silver on the underside.
Tazzas were used on the table to display sweetmeats or fruit, or as a stand for glasses. Refer to “English Domestic Brass” by Gentle & Field, pg 164. Most reference books are void of this rare piece of brass.
