He went to sea at the age of twelve and gained command of a ship at the age of eighteen. He joined the Virginia navy as a lieutenant before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.

GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON’S CANDLESTICKS
$24,000.00This pair of Sheffield plate candlesticks is one of four known pair ordered by George Washington in 1786. The candlesticks were sold at Anderson Galleries, later became Sotheby’s in 1917. At the time of the auction, William Lanier Washington submitted a notarized document stating the lineage of the candlesticks.
