Description
This is an unusually nice 1860 Model Naval Cutlass since it has the original sheath and frog. The frog has been removed for photography. The grip is wood covered with leather and originally wound with twisted brass wire. The brass guard is complete and stamped on top of the guard is “8M/998”. The sword is 32 inches overall. The blade is 26 inches long, slightly curved with a smooth silver surface with some areas of graying. The top of the blade is dated 1862 and on the overse side is stamped with the name “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass” all stamped on a banner. The sheath is copper riveted along the reverse side and is in excellent condition except for the last inch and one quarter of the back that is missing. The buff leather frog is stenciled “U.S.N.Y. Boston 1863”. The Ames Sword Company records indicate there were only 300 Naval Cutlasses of this model made for the Civil War.
