Description
This pair of Sheffield plate candlesticks is one of four known pair ordered by George Washington in 1786. The candlesticks were sold at Anderson Galleries, later became Sotheby’s in 1917. At the time of the auction, William Lanier Washington submitted a notarized document stating the lineage of the candlesticks.
Provided is a page from the auction catalog and a photostat of the notarized document. The candlesticks are also noted on the bottom from the auction. The candlesticks are marked with the maker’s mark inside the socket of the candlesticks. It is a five-petal flower. They are 10 ¼ inches high with a 5 ¼ inch diameter base. They are complete with original bobech and unpolished finish.
